Every autumn Pilatus Railways takes its Kriens lifts out of service for a few weeks of maintenance. In 2026 the closure runs from 19 October to 27 November, and it is in progress now.
It changes the shape of a Pilatus day more than it stops one. There is no gondola or cableway from Kriens and no boat to Alpnachstad, but the world's steepest cogwheel railway runs until 29 November. Here are the dates, the way up, and what the tours do instead.
The quick answer
From 19 October to 27 November 2026 the Pilatus panorama gondolas (Kriens to Fräkmüntegg) and the aerial cableway (Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm) are closed. The only way up is the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, about 17 minutes from Lucerne by train, running until 29 November. The guided tours from Lucerne and Zurich go up and down by cogwheel and replace the 1-hour boat cruise with a lunch voucher.
What is closed on Pilatus in autumn 2026?
The panorama gondolas from Kriens to Fräkmüntegg and the aerial cableway from Fräkmüntegg to Pilatus Kulm, from 19 October to 27 November 2026, for maintenance (Pilatus Railways).
This is the Kriens side of the mountain: the small red gondolas over the forest and the large "Dragon Ride" cabin to the summit. Pilatus Railways also closed them on 30 and 31 March 2026 for shorter work. During the autumn closure, it says, access to the summit is only possible by the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad.
Bus 1 still runs from Lucerne station to Kriens, but there is nothing to ride uphill from there until 28 November. Head for Alpnachstad instead.

How do you get up Pilatus during the closure?
By the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad, which runs until 29 November 2026. Reach Alpnachstad by train from Lucerne in about 17 minutes; the boat to Alpnachstad stopped after 18 October.
The Pilatus Railways timetable lists the first ascent from Alpnachstad at 08:10 and the last at 17:30, roughly every 35 minutes. The ride takes about 27 minutes up and 33 down, on gradients of up to 48%, on a line that opened in 1889. Reservations for the cogwheel are recommended but not obligatory; without one, expect waits at weekends and around lunchtime.
Without the gondolas you go up and come down the same way, and the cogwheel is the part many guests remember anyway. Catherine, after a guided day in Oct 2026: "Highlight was the cogwheel train back down the mountain." With a Swiss Travel Pass the train to Alpnachstad is covered; the cogwheel needs a discounted mountain ticket.

When do the Pilatus gondolas reopen?
On 28 November 2026, on winter hours. The cogwheel railway runs its last days on 28 and 29 November, so from 30 November Kriens is the only way up.
The winter operation listed by Pilatus Railways has the last ascent from Kriens at 16:00 and the last cableway down from Pilatus Kulm at 16:30, an hour earlier than in summer. The cogwheel railway runs from 11 May to 29 November in 2026 and then closes for the winter.
The Golden Round Trip itself, which needs the boat, the cogwheel and the gondolas, is sold from May to October. In 2026 it cost CHF 115 for an adult including the 2nd-class boat, or CHF 57.50 with the Half Fare card. Our Golden Round Trip guide has the route, the direction to choose and the timing.

Both Best of Switzerland Tours days go up and down by cogwheel from 19 October to 27 November 2026, and up by cable car with the cogwheel down on 28 and 29 November. The 1-hour cruise ran until 18 October; from 19 October to 29 November a lunch voucher replaces it, per the listings.
That applies to the guided half day from Lucerne, which starts at the Alpenquai coach park, and to the full day from Zurich, which leaves from Sihlquai bus station. The guide, the coach and the mountain stay the same; you trade the boat for a lunch on the mountain. The listings note the voucher applies if the autumn option is selected, so pick that one when you book.
Five-star reviews keep arriving during the closure weeks. Patricia, in Oct 2026: "Our guide, Milton, was great! [...] Our trip to Mt. Pilatus in Switzerland was absolutely beautiful [...]!" From Zurich, Craig wrote in Oct 2026: "We had just the right amount of time in Luzerne and Mt Pilatus."

Go up Rigi, which runs all year and is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, or take the 55-minute catamaran toward Bürgenstock, which sails every hour in winter.
Rigi is the nearest like-for-like day: a boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, then Europe's first mountain railway, from 1871, to Rigi Kulm at 1,798 m. Rigi Railways advertises cogwheel operation 365 days a year. One date to watch: from 16 to 27 November 2026 the Weggis cable car is closed, and the Rigi round trip runs via Vitznau in both directions. The Rigi ticket with the Kaltbad mineral baths adds a warm pool with the lake far below.
Short on time? The catamaran round trip from Pier 3 passes below the Bürgenstock cliff, where the funicular climbs to the resort, and is back in 55 minutes. Our Rigi by boat guide compares Vitznau and Weggis.

Rigi by boat and cogwheel at your own pace: the mountain that runs every day of the year.

It covers the train from Lucerne to Alpnachstad. The cogwheel railway needs a discounted mountain ticket, as it does all year; Rigi is covered in full.
For pass holders, a self-planned Pilatus day this autumn is a free train to Alpnachstad plus a cogwheel ticket bought from Pilatus Railways. What the guided tours add is the coach, the guide and the lunch voucher, with the mountain ticket included.
From 28 November the Kriens side reopens: bus 1 from Lucerne station to Kriens is covered by the pass, and the gondolas and cableway again need a mountain ticket. Our one day in Lucerne guide shows how to fit a mountain into a city day.
A guide, a coach and the mountain ticket in one booking, from Zurich: the Pilatus day runs through the closure.
