Booking choice: The old town walk and lake cruise, from $86 per person. Check dates Tour details
Lucerne is under an hour from Zurich by direct train, which makes it the classic day trip. The trouble is choice. The old town alone can fill a morning, the lake asks for at least an hour, and Rigi and Pilatus sit right there, each wanting half a day.
Here is a day plan that works, the sights that deserve your time, how far everything is on foot, a two-hour version for a short stop, how to add a mountain, and what to do if it pours.
The quick answer
Spend the morning in the old town: the Chapel Bridge, the squares, the Musegg Wall and the Lion Monument. Take the boat in the afternoon, either the 1-hour round trip from the station piers or the boat to Vitznau and the train up Rigi. With two hours, cross the Chapel Bridge and take the 55-minute catamaran. If it rains, the Swiss Museum of Transport is 10 minutes away by boat, bus or train.
What to do in Lucerne for 1 day?
Old town in the morning while it is quiet, lunch, then the lake in the afternoon. Add a mountain only if you are on the move by 9 a.m.
This is the plan we would follow on a first visit. It keeps the walking in one loop and the boat for the part of the day when you want to sit down.
| Time | What | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Chapel Bridge and Water Tower | Cross before the groups arrive |
| 09:30 | Old town squares | Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt, Hirschenplatz |
| 10:15 | Musegg Wall | Towers open 1 April to 1 November |
| 11:15 | Lion Monument | About 15 minutes from the old town on foot |
| 12:30 | Lunch by the river or the lake | |
| 14:00 | Boat from the station piers | 1-hour round trip, or the boat to Rigi |
| 16:00 | Spreuer Bridge and the riverfront | The evening light on the Reuss |
Walk the old town with a local guide, then add an hour on the lake: the city and the water in one morning.

The Chapel Bridge with its Water Tower, the painted squares, the Spreuer Bridge with its Dance of Death panels, and the Lion Monument.
- Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke): the covered wooden bridge over the Reuss, Lucerne's most photographed sight. Most of it burned on the night of 18 August 1993 and was rebuilt in eight months, per Lucerne Tourism. The painted panels under the roof follow a scheme finished in 1611.
- Water Tower (Wasserturm): the stone octagon beside the bridge, built around 1290 to 1300 and 34.5 m high. It has been a lookout, an archive, a treasury and a prison.
- The squares: the old town is car-free, and Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and Hirschenplatz carry frescoed facades. The fountain on Weinmarkt dates from 1481.
- Spreuer Bridge: the second covered bridge, slightly downstream, from 1408. Caspar Meglinger painted its Dance of Death series between 1625 and 1635.
- Lion Monument: the dying lion carved into a sandstone cliff, a short walk north of the old town.
All five are free to visit.

Can you walk the Musegg Wall?
Yes, from 1 April to 1 November, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The 800-metre medieval wall has nine towers, and four of them are open to climb.
Lucerne Tourism dates the wall to around 1400. The open towers are the Männli, Zyt, Wacht and Schirmer towers, and from the top you look over the roofs to the lake and Pilatus. The Zyt Tower of 1442 has a dial big enough for fishermen on the lake to read, and its bell strikes the hour one minute before all the others.
It is a climb: the wall sits on the hill at the back of the old town, so do it before lunch while your legs are fresh. After 1 November the towers close for winter; the walls still frame the skyline from the river.

Is the Lion Monument worth the walk?
Yes. It takes about 15 minutes on foot from the station or the old town, it is free, and Mark Twain called it "the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world".
The Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed it, and it was carved into the cliff in the 1820s and inaugurated in 1821. The lion is ten metres by six. It honours the Swiss Guards killed in Paris in 1792, and it sits in a quiet grotto above a pond at Denkmalstrasse 4.
Ten minutes there is plenty, and it fits neatly between the Musegg Wall and lunch.

Is Lucerne walkable?
Very. The station, the piers, the Chapel Bridge and the old town are all within a few minutes of each other, and the old town is car-free.
You only need transport for the lake and the mountains. Rough walking times, from Lucerne Tourism and the Swiss Museum of Transport:
| From the station to | On foot | Or |
|---|---|---|
| The boat piers (1, 2, 3) | A couple of minutes | Right across the square |
| Chapel Bridge | A few minutes | Along the river |
| Lion Monument | About 15 minutes | Through the old town |
| Musegg Wall | Up the hill behind the old town | Steps at the end |
| Swiss Museum of Transport | About 30 minutes along the lake | S3 train 8 min, bus 6, 8 or 24 10 min, boat 10 min |
What can you do in Lucerne in 2 hours?
Cross the Chapel Bridge and take the 55-minute catamaran round trip from Pier 3. It sails all year and leaves right outside the station.
Two hours is a train connection with a bit of slack, so stay close to the station. Twenty minutes on the Chapel Bridge and along the river, then the SGV catamaran out toward Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock and back. You get Pilatus, Rigi and the Bürgenstock cliff from the water, and you are back on the quay in under an hour.
Rather walk? The guided old town tour has a 2-hour option, starting at the arch in front of the station. With a Swiss Travel Pass the catamaran is already covered, since it is a scheduled SGV round trip; there is no commentary, and drinks are from a vending machine on board.

An hour on the lake from Pier 3, past Pilatus and Rigi toward Bürgenstock, every day of the year.
Explore the 1-hour catamaran cruise Tour detailsHow do you fit a lake cruise and a mountain into one day?
Choose one mountain and start it by late morning. Rigi by boat works all year; the Pilatus Golden Round Trip with the boat runs from May to October.
Both mountains use the boat, and both take most of an afternoon:
- Rigi round trip: the noon boat to Vitznau puts you on Rigi Kulm before 14:00 and back on the lake via Weggis in the early evening. Free with the Swiss Travel Pass.
- Pilatus Golden Round Trip: about 4.5 hours with the boat to Alpnachstad, the world's steepest cogwheel railway and the gondolas down to Kriens. The boat to Alpnachstad sails until 18 October, and the gondolas are closed from 19 October to 27 November 2026, per Pilatus Railways.
Do the old town in the morning and the mountain in the afternoon, or the reverse: the Golden Round Trip in the morning and the old town in the evening, when the day-trippers have gone. Doing both mountains in one day is possible on paper and miserable in practice. Our Rigi guide and Pilatus guide have the timings.

Go to the Swiss Museum of Transport. It is open every day of the year, 10 minutes from the station, and big enough for an afternoon.
The museum covers rail, road, air, water and space with more than 3,000 exhibits, flight and train simulators, a Road Transport Hall and the Swissarena, a walk-on aerial photo of Switzerland. The listing reckons two or three hours for most people. Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter, per the museum. The planetarium, Filmtheatre and Swiss Chocolate Adventure are extra.
Getting there is half the fun: the S3 or the Voralpen-Express takes about 8 minutes to Luzern Verkehrshaus, buses 6, 8 and 24 about 10 minutes, and the boat stop Verkehrshaus-Lido is about 10 minutes from the station piers. A wet day also suits the lunch cruise, which serves three courses in the first-class saloon.

Trains, ships, planes and space travel in hands-on halls by the lake, with its own boat stop.
