Steamships have run on Lake Lucerne since 1837. Today the SGV fleet has five historic paddle steamers next to 14 motor vessels, and the steamers work the regular routes from the piers by Lucerne station in the warmer months, as ordinary scheduled courses.
That last point is the useful one. A steamer course is not a special excursion; it is a normal boat on the timetable that happens to be 100 years old. Here are the five ships, how to find one, and the one cruise on board that is priced separately.
The quick answer
The five SGV paddle steamers are Uri (1901), Unterwalden (1902), Schiller (1906), Gallia (1913) and Stadt Luzern (1928). They sail scheduled courses from late spring to mid-October; the SGV online timetable names the ship on each course. Scheduled steamer courses are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass and the Lucerne Travel Pass. Gallia's five-hour "Legends of Lake Lucerne" cruise returns from 15 May to 15 September 2027.
Which paddle steamers sail on Lake Lucerne?
Five: Uri, Unterwalden, Schiller, Gallia and Stadt Luzern, built between 1901 and 1928. Uri is the oldest paddle steamer in Switzerland and Stadt Luzern is the flagship.
All five have two paddle wheels driven by a steam engine, a first-class saloon and an open upper deck. The SGV's fleet pages give each one a character. Uri carries a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark title from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Unterwalden has a retractable funnel, so she can pass under the Acheregg Bridge into Lake Alpnach. Stadt Luzern took General Henri Guisan and his officers to the Rütli meadow in July 1940, and Queen Elizabeth II sailed on her in May 1980.
| Steamer | Built | Builder (SGV) | Passengers | Known for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uri | 1901 | Sulzer brothers | 800 | Oldest paddle steamer in Switzerland; the only one fit for winter service |
| Unterwalden | 1902 | Escher, Wyss & Cie | 700 | Retractable funnel: the one steamer that reaches Alpnachstad |
| Schiller | 1906 | Sulzer, Winterthur | 900 | Art Nouveau first-class saloon with lemonwood and mother-of-pearl |
| Gallia | 1913 | Escher Wyss, Zurich | 900 | SGV calls her the fastest lake steamer in Europe (31 km/h) |
| Stadt Luzern | 1928 | Sachsenberg brothers, Rosslau | 1,100 | Flagship and the last paddle steamer built for a Swiss lake |

When do the paddle steamers run?
On scheduled courses from late spring to mid-October. In 2026 the busiest steamer days were summer weekends, when all five sailed; the last timetabled steamer courses ran with the autumn timetable, which ended on 18 October.
The enthusiasts' overview at swissitalianpaddlesteamers.com, built from the SGV timetables, shows the pattern for 2026. Saturdays and Sundays from late May listed all five steamers; summer weekdays had four or five; from late September the weekdays came down to Stadt Luzern alone, with Uri joining her on Sundays. From late October to the end of December no paddle steamers are advertised on timetabled sailings.
Winter is not entirely steam-free. The SGV describes Uri as the only steamer fit for winter operation and uses her for Advent and festive cruises in November and December, which are priced separately. For 2027 the summer timetable starts on 22 May (draft); our winter timetable post has the full list of dates.

How do you know if your boat is a paddle steamer?
Look at the ship name on the course. The SGV online timetable labels each departure with its vessel, "Steamboat Gallia" or "Motor vessel Diamant", so you can pick a steamer course before you go to the pier.
Three habits help:
- Check the day before. The ship on a course can change: swissitalianpaddlesteamers.com notes frequent day-to-day swaps, with a steamer replaced by another steamer or a motor vessel.
- Read the enthusiasts' calendar. On that site, dates in bold have at least one steamer planned; light dates have none in public service.
- Want one ship in particular? Ask the SGV directly. Plans for an individual steamer shift more often than the timetable does.
Some trips make a steamer likely in season. The Rigi listing mentions "nostalgic steamboats (in the summer)" on the boat to Vitznau, and only Unterwalden among the steamers can reach Alpnachstad for the Pilatus side.
The Pilatus Golden Round Trip uses the scheduled boat to Alpnachstad: on a steamer day, the boat leg comes with paddle wheels.
Check dates for the Pilatus Golden Round TripAre the paddle steamers covered by the Swiss Travel Pass?
Yes, on scheduled courses. Steamer courses are regular SGV services, covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, the Flex on a travel day and the Lucerne Travel Pass; the Half Fare card gives 50%.
You simply board the steamer as you would any SGV boat. What the passes do not cover is the steamer's special trips: dining and event cruises such as Gallia's Legends cruise or Uri's festive cruises are priced separately.
Pass holders get the steamers for free, so the paid add-ons that make sense are the ones that bring something else: Pilatus on the Golden Round Trip, Rigi on the Rigi round trip, or a seat and lunch on the first-class lunch cruise. If you are still choosing a pass, the Swiss Travel Pass covers every scheduled boat on the lake; our pass guide has the details.

Every scheduled SGV boat, the steamers included, plus trains, buses and Rigi, on one pass for 3 to 15 days.

A five-hour cruise on the steamer Gallia with a regional five-course menu, wine and champagne, and the story of steam navigation told through its pioneer Casimir Friedrich Knörr. The SGV lists cruises from 15 May to 15 September 2027.
The SGV schedule for 2027 has a day cruise on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (boarding from 10:00, back by 15:00) and an evening cruise on Wednesdays (boarding from 17:15, ending at 22:00). Both leave from Pier 5. Drinks are included with the menu.
It is an event cruise, so it is priced on its own and not covered by the passes. The ship is Gallia: built in 1913 by Escher Wyss, with a Belle Époque saloon, she is the one the SGV calls the fastest lake steamer in Europe, at up to 31 km/h.
Which trips put you on a steamer in season?
Any scheduled course where the timetable names a steamer: the boat legs of the Golden Round Trip and the Rigi round trip use the scheduled boats, so on a steamer course you ride one at no extra cost.
Guests notice the difference. Angela, on the guided Pilatus day in Oct 2026: "The cable car, gondola ride, the hiking, the cogwheel train and the steam boat cruise were all fantastic." On the self-guided Golden Round Trip, Karen's tip from Sep 2026 is about timing: "I recommend doing the lake cruise first if you can as we waited quite a while for the next boat."
Right now the steamer season is over, and the Pilatus boat returns with the summer timetable. Book a 2027 Golden Round Trip for a day when the timetable shows a steamer to Alpnachstad. Our best cruise guide compares the routes.
