Rigi by boat, then the mineral baths

A one-day ticket from Lucerne: the SGV boat to Vitznau, the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, and a day in the Rigi Kaltbad mineral baths before the cable car takes you down to Weggis. Pick it if you want the classic Rigi loop to end in warm water with the lake far below.

Rigi by Boat, Train & Mineral Baths

About this experience

Rigi Bahnen sells this as one self-guided ticket. You take a 2nd class SGV boat from Pier 1, opposite Lucerne station, to Vitznau (about 50 minutes), and change straight onto the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, 1,798 m. That line has run since 1871 and MySwitzerland calls it the first mountain railway of Europe. From the top you walk down to Rigi Kaltbad in about 35 minutes or take the hourly train, spend as long as you like in the baths, then ride the cable car to Weggis and the boat home. Rides on the Vitznau line are unlimited for the day.

The baths are the Mineralbad & Spa Rigi Kaltbad, designed by Mario Botta, at about 1,450 m. Luzern Tourism puts the water at about 35°C. Aqua Spa Resorts, which runs it, opens daily from 10:00 to 20:00, with swimming ending 30 minutes before closing; there is no time slot on this ticket. Bring swimwear. Towels can be rented on site for a small fee. The ticket is not suitable for babies under 1, and there is no guide: one reviewer puts it well, it is a multi-part ticket that saves you the organising.

Pass holders: The scheduled SGV boats are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass (the Flex on a travel day) and the Lucerne Travel Pass; the Half Fare card gives 50% off. The Rigi railways are free with the Swiss Travel Pass too, so for them the new part here is the bath entry. Without a pass, this bundles the whole day on one ticket. Two closures matter this autumn: the Weggis cable car stops from 16 to 27 November 2026 (you go down by train to Vitznau instead, and the listing gives no refund for that), and the baths close for maintenance from 23 to 27 November 2026. Plan around that week.

  • The SGV boat from Pier 1 to Vitznau, right across from Lucerne station
  • The cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, Europe's first mountain railway, unlimited all day
  • The Rigi Kaltbad mineral baths by Mario Botta, about 35°C, with the lake below
  • A 35-minute walk from the summit down to Rigi Kaltbad, or the hourly train
  • The cable car from Kaltbad to Weggis and the boat back, so the day is a loop

Who it suits

Book it if

  • You want a slow day: boat, train, summit, then hours in warm water
  • You have just landed and need something gentle; one reviewer beat jet lag this way
  • You like to set your own times, with no group and no guide
  • Grey weather up top does not ruin it: the baths work in cloud too

Skip it if

  • You hold a Swiss Travel Pass and do not care about the spa: the classic Rigi round trip is the same loop without the baths
  • You are visiting from 23 to 27 November 2026: the baths are closed for maintenance
  • You only have an hour or two: the 1-hour catamaran cruise leaves from the next pier
  • You would rather see Pilatus: the Golden Round Trip pairs the boat with the steepest cogwheel railway

What guests say

★★★★★

What a wonderful day this was! We arrived in Switzerland at 7:30, jet lagged, and unable to yet get into our hotel room. We decided to go on this tour and it was amazing!! The boat pier is directly across from Lucerne train station and you can immediately board without having to wait in line. [...] The spa was perfect. What a relaxing and fun way to beat the jet lag and enjoy ourselves!

great, loved the relaxing boat ride Vitznau, train ride up the mountain, time on mountain, walk back down to mineral baths, lazing in the pools, no time restrictions it was our own pace

Highly recommend. Super fun and low key. [...] The walk from Mount Regi to Kalt Bad is definitely worth it - takes around 40 minutes. The highlight are the mineral baths with spa sauna and steam in a stunningly nice Facility. It was soooo soothing.

Tips before you book

  • Pack swimwear and, if you have one, a towel. Towels can be rented at the baths for a small fee.
  • Go up first and bathe after. The baths stay open to 20:00, and the last listed boat connections leave Kaltbad from 15:15.
  • The 08:00 to 10:00 slot at the baths is for Hotel Rigi Kaltbad guests, so there is no point rushing.
  • In November, check the dates: Weggis cable car closed 16 to 27 November 2026, baths closed 23 to 27 November 2026.
  • Boats run all year on the winter timetable from 19 October. Check the SGV timetable for your date; reviewers found more boats to Vitznau than the listing names.
