Pilatus Golden Round Trip

The Golden Round Trip puts a lake cruise, the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, a cableway and a gondola into one loop from Lucerne. Here is how to run it, in which direction and in which months.

Pilatus is the mountain you see from every Lucerne quay, a jagged ridge at the south-west end of the lake. The Golden Round Trip is the classic way up and down it. You go one way by boat and cogwheel railway, the other by cableway, gondola and city bus, and you never retrace a step.

It is a self-guided ticket from Pilatus Railways, valid for one day, from May to October. Two things shape the timing: the boats to Alpnachstad are few, and the gondolas close for maintenance from 19 October to 27 November 2026. Both are covered below.

The quick answer

Take the boat from Pier 2 to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up to Pilatus Kulm, then the cableway and gondolas down to Kriens and bus 1 back. Allow 5 to 6 hours with time at the top. Pilatus Railways quotes CHF 115 for adults and CHF 57.50 with the Half Fare card (2026). It runs May to October.

What is the Mount Pilatus Golden Round Trip?

A one-day loop from Lucerne: boat to Alpnachstad, cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 m, aerial cableway and panorama gondolas down to Kriens, and bus 1 back to Lucerne station.

The ticket covers every leg: the mountain railways, the boat between Lucerne and Alpnachstad and the bus between Kriens and Lucerne, per Pilatus Railways. You choose your own departures. There is no guide, and the ticket cannot be split over two days or combined with a night on the mountain.

On the way you pass two mid-stations. Fräkmüntegg has a rope park and a toboggan run, and Krienseregg has a terrace restaurant and the Pilu Land playground, per the listing. Both are extras you pay for on the spot.

Which direction is best for the Golden Round Trip?

Boat first. Start at Pier 2, go up by cogwheel railway and come down by cableway and gondola. The boats are the leg with the fewest departures, so fixing them first makes the rest of the day easy.

The listing warns that there are only 2 to 5 boat departures a day between Lucerne and Alpnachstad, against cableways and gondolas that run continuously. If you do the reverse, a long lunch on the summit can leave you waiting at Alpnachstad for the last boat. Boat first also lets you reserve a cogwheel seat that matches your arrival, and it saves the walk: from the gondola station in Kriens to the bus stop is downhill.

★★★★★

Absolutely worth every penny! I recommend doing the lake cruise first if you can as we waited quite a while for the next boat, but that was our fault.

The reverse direction, bus and gondola first, has one upside: if clouds are forecast for the afternoon, you reach the top earlier. Both directions are valid on the same ticket.

Fix the boat, then the rest flows: the self-guided Golden Round Trip in either direction, free cancellation up to 24 hours.

How steep is the Pilatus cogwheel railway?

Up to 48%, with an average of 38%. Pilatus Railways calls it the world's steepest cogwheel railway, and it has run since 1889.

The line climbs from Alpnachstad on the lake to Pilatus Kulm in about 30 minutes, through meadows, forest and finally bare rock faces.

Reserve a seat if you travel on a summer weekend. The listing recommends it to avoid long waits, and the Pilatus timetable says waiting times are possible at busy times.

When does the Golden Round Trip run, and is it open now?

From May to October. In late October 2026 the full loop is not possible: the boat to Alpnachstad stopped on 18 October, and the gondolas and cableway are closed from 19 October to 27 November 2026.

Pilatus Railways sets the dates. In 2026 the cogwheel railway runs from 11 May to 29 November, and the boat service between Lucerne and Alpnachstad ran until 18 October. During the maintenance closure, the only way up is the cogwheel from Alpnachstad, which you can reach by train from Lucerne in about 17 minutes. The gondolas reopen on 28 November, after which Kriens is the way up for the winter.

The guided tours adapt too: both the guided half day and the day from Zurich go up and down by cogwheel during the closure, and replace the boat with a lunch voucher, per their listings. The whole schedule is in our Pilatus maintenance post. Pilatus Railways also sells a Silver Round Trip, with the train instead of the boat.

Guided or self-guided: which Pilatus tour should you book?

Self-guided if you are comfortable with timetables; it is cheaper and you set the pace. Guided if you want someone to handle the connections, or if you are coming from Zurich.

Both guided tours include the 1-hour cruise back from Alpnachstad only until 18 October 2026, then a lunch voucher, per the listings. The self-guided ticket has no guide and no cogwheel seat reservation included, but it is the one with the most freedom at the top.

A guide and a coach from Lucerne: gondola and cableway up, cogwheel down, in 5.5 hours.

What is there to do at the top of Pilatus?

Walk to one of the peaks, sit on the terrace, eat at the summit hotels or follow the Dragon Trail. Give yourself at least an hour and a half.

Pilatus Kulm has a panoramic gallery, terraces and two hotels, Hotel Pilatus-Kulm and Hotel Bellevue, per the listing. Short paths lead to the peaks in 5 to 10 minutes, and the Dragon Trail runs through the rock, after the medieval legend of dragons living on the mountain. Look down and the lake spreads out in its arms below you.

It is 2,132 m up, so bring a layer even in summer, and check the webcam before you go. The trip runs in almost all weather, the listing says, but a cloudy summit is a very different day. Want a calm hour on the water as well? Pair it with another Lake Lucerne cruise on a second day.

★★★★★

Fun day! We started with Mt Pilatus and went from there. Easy peasy! It’s September so not too crowded which was nice. No long waits for any of the rides.
