Rigi by boat

The classic Rigi day starts on the pier in front of Lucerne station: a boat to Vitznau, Europe's first mountain railway to the summit, then a cable car down to Weggis and the boat home. One loop, four kinds of transport, no backtracking.

Rigi is the mountain you can see from the Lucerne waterfront, rising out of the lake between two of its arms. It isn't the highest peak around. What it has is the easiest summit day in central Switzerland: the boat, the train and the cable car connect at the piers, and with a Swiss Travel Pass every leg is free.

This guide covers the route in both directions, how long each leg takes, what the view from Rigi Kulm really shows, the mineral baths at Rigi Kaltbad, what your pass covers, and the one closure to know this autumn: the Weggis cable car is out of service from 16 to 27 November 2026.

The quick answer

Take the boat from Pier 1 to Vitznau (50 minutes to an hour), the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm (about 32 minutes), the train down to Rigi Kaltbad, the 10-minute cable car to Weggis and the boat back (about 40 minutes). Allow half a day at a push, a full day to enjoy it. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the boats, the Rigi railways and the Weggis cable car.

How does the Rigi round trip from Lucerne work?

It is a loop: boat from Lucerne to Vitznau, cogwheel railway up to Rigi Kulm, train down to Rigi Kaltbad, cable car to Weggis, boat back to Lucerne.

Everything runs on the public timetable, so there is no tour group and no fixed start. The boats leave from Pier 1, the landing stage right across from Lucerne station, and the SGV boats to Vitznau call at Weggis on the way. In Vitznau the Rigi railway station is right next to the boat station, as Rigi Railways put it, so the change takes a few minutes. In summer some sailings are paddle steamers, per the tour listing; the rest of the year a motor ship does the run.

On the way down you switch from the train to the cable car at Rigi Kaltbad, a short walk apart. In Weggis the cable car's valley station sits above the village, roughly a 15-minute walk from the pier.

Should you go up from Vitznau or from Weggis?

Up from Vitznau, down to Weggis. That is the order the classic ticket suggests, and it puts the busy cable car on the way down, when you are no longer in a hurry.

Going up via Vitznau is the smooth start. You step off the boat, cross to the train and ride the historic line the whole way to the summit. Low-floor trains generally run from Vitznau, which is why the listing recommends this side for wheelchair users, and for everyone once there is snow on the mountain.

The Weggis side is quicker to Kaltbad but has two snags. The cable car fills up: two June reviewers said the cabin was packed; Elizabeth called it "jampacked with people". And the walk between the cable car and the pier is about 15 minutes, up or down. Reverse the loop only if you want the boat ride to be the end of your day rather than the start, or to spend the morning in Weggis.

  • Via Vitznau: boat 50 minutes to an hour, train about 32 minutes, no walk between them.
  • Via Weggis: boat about 40 minutes, a 15-minute walk, the cable car about 10 minutes, then the train from Kaltbad to the top.
  • Vitznau both ways: simplest with a pram, a wheelchair or in snow, and the only option from 16 to 27 November 2026.

Why is the Rigi railway famous?

It opened in 1871 as the first mountain railway in Europe, climbing from Vitznau to the summit. A second cogwheel line comes up from Arth-Goldau on the far side.

MySwitzerland calls it "the first mountain railway of Europe", and the Vitznau line still carries most visitors who come by boat. The tour listings still sell it as the Queen of the Mountains.

The Arth-Goldau line is the one to know if you come from Zurich by train: Rigi Railways place its station right next to the main-line station in Arth-Goldau, about 40 minutes from the summit. Up one side, down the other, and the boat back to Lucerne is another way to build a loop. At the top, the RIGI BAHNEN listing mentions a new Lok 7 exhibition at the top, free of charge.

What can you see from Rigi Kulm?

A 360-degree view from 1,798 m: the arms of Lake Lucerne below, the Swiss Plateau to the north, and on clear days the line of the Alps to the south.

The SGV listing for the round trip promises the Swiss Plateau, the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Alps from the summit, which on a sharp day is no exaggeration. Closer in, you look straight down on the arms of Lake Lucerne and the villages on the shore. Pilatus stands across the water to the west.

Clouds are the gamble. In autumn the valleys often fill with fog while the summit sits in the sun, and the summit hotel takes overnight guests who want sunrise above it. Keep a spare day if the view matters to you.

Sarb, in August, summed it up: "an excellent trip to Mt Rigi, very well connected by ferry and then train up to the summit for fabulous views."

Is the Rigi Kaltbad mineral bath worth it?

Yes, if you have the time. The bath is designed by Mario Botta, holds 35 °C spring water at 1,433 m, and has an outdoor pool facing the lake and the Alps.

MySwitzerland describes a large indoor pool leading out to an outdoor pool, a herbal steam bath and a lounging area, open daily, on a site that continues a bathing tradition of more than 600 years. The spa area is open from age 16. Rigi Kaltbad sits on both the cogwheel line and the cable car, so the bath fits neatly into the descent.

The RIGI BAHNEN combo ticket bundles it all: the round-trip boat in 2nd class, unlimited rides on the Vitznau to Rigi Kulm railway, the Weggis cable car and day entry to the bath. Practical points from that listing:

  • Bring your own swimwear; towels can be rented for CHF 6 each.
  • Boats leave Lucerne at 09:12, 10:12, 12:00, 14:12 and 15:12 for this ticket.
  • From the summit to Kaltbad you can walk in about 35 minutes or take the hourly train.
  • Back via Vitznau by train at 15:15, 16:15 or 17:15, or by cable car to Weggis from 16:10 to 17:40.
  • Not suitable for babies under 1.

Is Rigi free with the Swiss Travel Pass?

Yes. The Swiss Travel Pass covers the SGV boats, the Rigi railways and the Weggis to Rigi Kaltbad cable car, so the whole loop costs a pass holder nothing extra.

Rigi Railways list the Swiss Travel Pass among the tickets that travel free on their lines, and Lucerne Tourism lists it as valid on the Weggis cable car. The scheduled SGV boats are free with the pass too. A Flex pass works on a travel day you have activated.

  • Half Fare travelcard: 50% off on Rigi Railways (and on the boats).
  • Eurail or Interrail: 50% off on Rigi Railways, per their Q&A.
  • Children: Rigi Railways carry children up to and including 15 free when they travel with an adult.

That is the key difference from Pilatus, where pass holders still need a discounted mountain ticket; our Pilatus Golden Round Trip guide has the details. Without a pass, the classic Rigi round trip puts the boat, both railway legs and the cable car on one ticket, which saves buying each leg at a different counter. The Swiss Travel Pass guide covers the rest of the lake.

How long does the Rigi round trip take?

Plan a full day, roughly 09:00 to 17:00, to have time at the top and at Kaltbad. A half day from noon works if you keep the summit stop short.

The ticket is valid for one day and not tied to any departure, so these sample times from the SGV listing are a guide, not a booking. Boats and trains run all day.

Is the Weggis cable car running in November 2026?

No. The cable car from Rigi Kaltbad to Weggis is closed for maintenance from 16 to 27 November 2026; during that time the trip runs via Vitznau both ways.

Nothing else changes: the boat still sails Lucerne to Vitznau, and the cogwheel railway takes you up and back down to the same pier. You lose the loop, not the mountain. The SGV round-trip listing switches to this Vitznau-and-back routing automatically for those dates.

Rigi stays open in winter. Rigi Railways run winter sports on the mountain, with free toboggan runs and ski lifts in season, all weather-dependent. Boats to Vitznau and Weggis keep sailing on the winter timetable from 19 October 2026; the best time guide explains the seasons.
