Passenger Diaries · Lucerne station arch
A small-group walk through Lucerne's old town with a local guide, from the arch at the station past Chapel Bridge, the Lion Monument and the Musegg Wall, with an hour on the lake as an option. Pick it on your first day: you learn the town and its history, then see it from the water.

Passenger Diaries Swiss Travel Tours meets you at the Torbogen, the old stone arch on Bahnhofplatz in front of Lucerne station. The walk takes in Chapel Bridge, the covered wooden bridge from the 14th century with its stone Water Tower, largely rebuilt after a fire in 1993; the Lion Monument, carved into a sandstone cliff in the 1820s for the Swiss Guards killed in Paris in 1792; the Musegg Wall and its towers above the roofs; the Spreuer Bridge and the Reuss river. Groups are eight people at most, and one reviewer had a group of four.
You choose a 2, 3 or 3.5-hour option when you book. The add-ons are a 1-hour sightseeing cruise on the lake and a Swiss cheese tasting with wine in the old town. The name on the listing mentions cheese and wine, but only the options that say so include them, so read the option line before you pay. Live guiding is in English or Spanish, and an audio guide covers more languages.
A note for pass holders: The scheduled SGV boats are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass (the Flex on a travel day) and the Lucerne Travel Pass; the Half Fare card gives 50% off. If you already hold one, the walk-only option plus the 1-hour catamaran from Pier 3 afterwards gives you the same lake hour. One reviewer missed commentary on the boat, so treat the cruise as scenery time after the guiding. There is a moderate amount of walking, some of it uphill to the wall. Dress for the weather.
Meet your guide at the stone arch in front of Lucerne station.
Across the covered bridge and past the Water Tower, the town's best-known view.
The dying lion carved into the cliff, and the history of the Swiss Guards.
Up to the medieval wall and its towers, with views over the roofs and the lake.
Back down to the second wooden bridge and along the river. The tasting (30 minutes) fits here if you booked it.
An hour on the water with the old town, its towers and the mountains around you.
★★★★★We were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves in a small group of 4 people. This gave us a chance to ask many questions, and our guide answered them all. She led us to the city walls and the clock tower, which I would have never found on my own, and she gave us history lessons on all of it.
★★★★★Very knowledgeable, time efficient and fun. [...] The chestnut cart was a fun added surprise (we ended up getting chestnuts there several times during our stay lol) Great tour to start a trip in Lucerne to become more familiar with the city.
★★★★★Recommend this three hour Swiss experience in the city that is now our absolute favourite Swiss city. We had lots of fun with Isabella and she got us back to the boat in time.
★★★★★The tour was a great way to better understand the history and culture of Lucerne in a small group format with a knowledgeable local guide.
