Pilatus-Bahnen AG · Lucerne station: bus 1 or Pier 2

Pilatus by boat and cogwheel

The classic Pilatus loop from Lucerne in one ticket: bus and panorama gondola up from Kriens, the steepest cogwheel railway in the world down to Alpnachstad, and the boat back across the lake. You go at your own pace, in either direction.

Pilatus Golden Round Trip with Boat

About this experience

This is the ticket Pilatus Railways sells itself, the Golden Round Trip. Bus 1 from outside Lucerne station takes you to Kriens, panorama gondolas and the Dragon Ride cableway lift you to Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 m, the cogwheel railway drops you down to Alpnachstad, and a boat brings you back to Lucerne, next to the station. Or the reverse. There is no guide and no fixed start time: you pick the connections, and the listing puts the whole loop at about 4.5 hours.

The round trip runs May to October. From 19 October to 27 November 2026 the panorama gondolas and the aerial cableway are closed for maintenance, and the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad is the only way up. For the full loop with the boat, plan for next season. The boat leg is a scheduled SGV course from Pier 2, and with a Swiss Travel Pass the boat and the bus are already covered. The mountain part is not: pass holders still need a discounted mountain ticket from Pilatus Railways. This ticket bundles all of it.

Two things are not included and both matter. A seat reservation on the cogwheel railway is extra, and Pilatus Railways recommends one: reservations cannot be cancelled, but you can move the slot up to 30 minutes before departure. And the boats to Alpnachstad are few, 2 to 5 a day per the listing, so build the day around them. Children under 6 ride free. The trip runs in almost all weather; cloud on the summit is the risk, not cancellation.

  • The world's steepest cogwheel railway, opened in 1889, up to 48% gradient
  • Panorama gondolas from Kriens and the Dragon Ride cableway to the top
  • Pilatus Kulm at 2,132 m: terraces, short summit trails, two hotels
  • About an hour on Lake Lucerne between Alpnachstad and Lucerne
  • Self-guided and valid in both directions

How the day runs

  1. 11 minBus 1 to Kriens

Take bus 1 (direction Obernau, Dorf) from in front of Lucerne station to Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus, then walk a few minutes to the gondola station.

  2. 30 minGondolas to Fräkmüntegg

Fifteen minutes to Krienseregg, with a playground and a terrace restaurant, then another fifteen to Fräkmüntegg, where a rope park and a self-service restaurant wait (both at your own expense).

  3. 5 minDragon Ride to the top

Change to the aerial cableway at Fräkmüntegg. The cabin has huge windows and a cockpit feel, and five minutes later you are at Pilatus Kulm.

  4. Your paceTime on the summit

Stay in the panoramic gallery, walk out on the terraces, or climb one of the peaks in 5 to 10 minutes. Food at Hotel Bellevue or Hotel Pilatus Kulm is extra.

  5. About 30 minCogwheel down to Alpnachstad

The cogwheel railway runs down through rock faces and Alpine meadows. At Alpnachstad you pass under the road to the landing stage.

  6. About 1 hBoat back to Lucerne

The scheduled boat crosses the lake to Lucerne and lands by the station. Check the departure before you leave the summit.

We took the boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, then the cogwheel railway to Pilatus Kulm and down by cable car to Kriens and Lucerne. A wonderful trip in good weather.

Fantastic day out! It wasn't busy so everything went really smoothly. Spectacular views from the top! Highly recommend for a great day!

Absolutely worth every penny! I recommend doing the lake cruise first if you can as we waited quite a while for the next boat, but that was our fault. This is one of those once in a lifetime experiences.

Fun day! We started with Mt Pilatus and went from there. Easy peasy! [...] No long waits for any of the rides. All the staff were very helpful if we had questions. Beautiful views!!

Tips before you book

  • Start with the boat. With only a handful of sailings to Alpnachstad, it is easier to fix the boat first and reserve a cogwheel slot to match.
  • Going boat first also means you finish downhill: from the gondola station in Kriens it is a downhill walk to the bus stop.
  • Reserve the cogwheel seat with Pilatus Railways. It cannot be cancelled, but the slot can be moved up to 30 minutes before.
  • Check the summit webcam that morning. In low cloud the mountain is still worth it for the rides, less so for the view.
  • Pack a layer. Pilatus Kulm sits almost 1,700 m above the lake, and the terraces catch the wind.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Golden Round Trip now?

The round trip runs May to October. From 19 October to 27 November 2026 the gondolas and cableway are closed for maintenance and the cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad is the only way up, so the full loop returns next season.

Is the Golden Round Trip free with the Swiss Travel Pass?

Not all of it. The boat and the bus are covered by the pass, but the cogwheel railway, cableway and gondolas need a discounted mountain ticket from Pilatus Railways.

Which direction is better?

Both work. Many guests go boat first: the boats to Alpnachstad are few, so you fix that leg early, and you end with the downhill walk to the bus in Kriens.

Do I need a reservation for the cogwheel railway?

It is not included and not compulsory, but Pilatus Railways recommends one to avoid long waits. A reservation cannot be cancelled; the slot can be changed up to 30 minutes before departure.
