Booking choice: The Pilatus Golden Round Trip, from $145 per person. Check dates Tour details
Lake Lucerne is not one round basin. It is a chain of arms that bend around Pilatus, Rigi and Bürgenstock, about 30 km end to end, and the boat you pick decides how much of it you see. An hour on the catamaran stays in the bay near the city. The full run to Flüelen goes all the way into Lake Uri, between walls of rock.
Almost all of it is run by one company, the Lake Lucerne Navigation Company (SGV). Its scheduled boats run all year, five of them are paddle steamers, and the main Swiss travel passes cover them. The trips that cost extra are the ones with something added: a meal, a guide or a mountain.
The quick answer
For one hour, take the catamaran round trip from Pier 3. For half a day, the Short Lake Cruise to Beckenried and back (about 2 h 30). For the whole lake, the Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen (about 5 h 30). For the best single day, combine the boat with Pilatus on the Golden Round Trip, which runs May to October.
What is the best cruise on Lake Lucerne?
It depends on your time. The 1-hour catamaran is the best short ride, the Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen is the best of the lake itself, and the boat to Alpnachstad on the Pilatus Golden Round Trip is the best full day.
Here is how we would match the cruise to the traveller:
- One or two free hours in Lucerne: the 1-hour catamaran from Pier 3. It runs all year and you are back where you started.
- A relaxed half day: the Short Lake Cruise to Beckenried and back, past Weggis and Vitznau.
- Lake lovers with a full day: the Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen, on Lake Uri.
- Steamer fans: any scheduled course that the timetable marks as a paddle steamer.
- A sit-down meal on the water: the first-class lunch cruise, about two hours.
- The lake plus a mountain: the Pilatus Golden Round Trip or the classic Rigi round trip.
If you only do one thing in Lucerne beyond the old town, make it the lake with a mountain. The boat to Alpnachstad is a cruise in its own right, and the steepest cogwheel railway in the world is waiting at the end of it.

How long is a boat ride on Lake Lucerne?
From 55 minutes to about 5 h 30 for a round trip. The catamaran takes 55 minutes, the Short Lake Cruise about 2 h 30 and the Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen about 5 h 30, per the 2026 SGV round-trips manual.
One-way times help if you plan to get off somewhere. Weggis is about 40 minutes from Lucerne, Vitznau about 50, Alpnachstad about an hour and Brunnen about 1 h 40. Every scheduled boat calls at several piers on the way, and you can break the trip and take a later boat.
| Cruise (SGV 2026) | Pier in Lucerne | Round trip | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Short catamaran cruise to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock | Pier 3 | 55 min | All year, hourly |
| 1-hour Discovery Cruise in the Lucerne bay | Pier 7 | 1 h | 18 April to 18 October |
| Short Lake Cruise to Beckenried | Pier 1 | About 2 h 30 | All year |
| Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen | Pier 1 | About 5 h 30 | All year |
| Boat to Alpnachstad (Pilatus) | Pier 2 | About 1 h each way | Main season, to 18 October |
The shortest cruise worth taking: an hour on the hybrid catamaran, all year, from the pier by the station.
Check dates for the 1-hour catamaran cruiseCatamaran or Discovery Cruise: which 1-hour cruise is better?
The catamaran, for most people: it runs every day of the year and the main passes cover it. The Discovery Cruise runs only from spring to autumn and stays closer to the city shore.
The short catamaran cruise leaves Pier 3 in front of the KKL concert hall, crosses to Kehrsiten-Bürgenstock below the Bürgenstock cliff and comes back in 55 minutes. The boat is a modern hybrid catamaran with a drinks machine on board and no food, per SGV. There is no commentary, which surprises some people. Children up to 5 ride free, per the listing. A traveller who rode it this autumn put it simply:
★★★★★It was a really beautiful ride and longer than I thought. I wasn’t mad at that.
The Discovery Cruise leaves Pier 7 on the Schweizerhofquai and loops past lakeside villas, Meggenhorn Castle, Bürgenstock and the Richard Wagner Museum. In 2026 it ran from 18 April to 18 October on a replacement motor vessel without the audioguide, while the Saphir yacht is converted to hydrogen. It is a special round trip, so pass holders get a discount rather than a free ride.

An hour on the water without planning: the scheduled catamaran round trip from Pier 3, in any season. Pass holders ride it on their pass.
Explore the 1-hour catamaran cruise Tour detailsIs the Grand Lake Cruise to Flüelen worth it?
Yes, if the lake is the point of your day. It is the only cruise that takes you into Lake Uri, the narrow southern arm, and the scenery gets wilder the further you go.
From Pier 1 the boat runs past Weggis, Vitznau and Gersau to Brunnen, then turns south into Lake Uri, where the shores close in and the mountains rise straight out of the water. On the way it passes the Rütli meadow, the traditional founding site of the Swiss Confederation, before reaching Flüelen at the end of the arm. The SGV ticket has no fixed departure, so you can get off anywhere and pick up a later boat.
Plan for the whole day. About 5 h 30 on the water is a lot if you are not a boat person, and in the winter timetable, which runs until 16 April 2027, the SGV manual lists a single Grand Lake Cruise departure, at 10.12. In summer they leave hourly from 09.12 to 14.12. If 5 hours feels long, ride as far as Brunnen and come back from there.

What is the Short Lake Cruise to Beckenried like?
It is the half-day version: about 2 h 30 from Pier 1 to Beckenried and back, daily all year, with the villages of the Weggis and Vitznau shore on the way.
This one suits people who want more than an hour but not the whole lake. In spring, summer and autumn you usually change boats in Beckenried; in the winter timetable the departures at 09.12, 14.12, 15.12 and 16.12 run without a change, per SGV. In summer there is also a 19.12 sunset cruise without a change.
Weggis is the stop to know. It is a lakeside resort with a promenade, gardens and hotels, about 40 minutes from Lucerne, and the cable car up Rigi starts in the village. Vitznau, ten minutes on, is where the Rigi cogwheel railway leaves from the pier. Both are the start of the Rigi by boat guide.

How do you ride a paddle steamer on Lake Lucerne?
Take a scheduled course that the timetable marks as a steamer. SGV keeps five paddle steamers built between 1901 and 1928, and they run as normal boats, so a normal ticket or a pass gets you on.
The five are the Uri, the Unterwalden, the Schiller, the Gallia and the Stadt Luzern, and all five appear on the 2026 timetables. They move at about 20 km/h, slower than the motor ships, which is part of the appeal. Most steamer courses run in the summer season, and not every boat on a route is a steamer, so check the timetable symbol before you go to the pier.
The Gallia also runs a themed cruise, Legends of Lake Lucerne, with dates published for 2027 from 15 May to 15 September. Each steamer's story is in our paddle steamer post.

Is a lunch cruise on Lake Lucerne worth it?
Yes, if a proper sit-down meal is part of the plan. The first-class lunch cruise gives you a window table and three courses on a round trip of about 1 h 45 to 2 hours.
The SGV lunch cruise boards at the Bahnhofquai around midday and runs toward Vitznau or Küssnacht and back. You choose a set three-course menu, meat or vegetarian, and one mineral water and one coffee or tea are included. Other drinks and alcohol are paid on board. It is a dining cruise, so it is priced separately from the scheduled boats even for pass holders. From $142, 4.3 from 418 reviews.
★★★★★We had a delightful experience on this Lake Lucerne boat cruise! Lunch was delicious, the service was great and it was the perfect amount of time for an excursion.
One tip from the reviews: the listing names the Bahnhofquai, and one traveller found the ship at the second pier a two-minute walk away. Arrive a little early.
A window table in first class and three freshly cooked courses, coffee included, on a two-hour round trip.
Check dates for the first-class lunch cruiseWhich cruise is best combined with a mountain?
The boat to Alpnachstad with Pilatus, or the boat to Vitznau with Rigi. Both turn a cruise into the best day out in the region.
The Pilatus Golden Round Trip starts at Pier 2: about an hour by boat to Alpnachstad, the cogwheel railway up at gradients of up to 48%, then the aerial cableway and gondolas down to Kriens and bus 1 back to Lucerne. It runs May to October. The details are in the Golden Round Trip guide.
The classic Rigi round trip starts at Pier 1: boat to Vitznau, the cogwheel railway to Rigi Kulm, down to Rigi Kaltbad, the cable car to Weggis and the boat home. Rigi runs all year and the Swiss Travel Pass covers it in full. Pilatus needs a discounted mountain ticket even with that pass.
Right now, at the end of October, the boat to Alpnachstad has stopped for the season and the Pilatus gondolas are closed for maintenance from 19 October to 27 November 2026. For a lake-and-mountain day this autumn, Rigi is the easier pick. The Golden Round Trip is the one to plan for May.

The classic lake-and-mountain day: boat to Alpnachstad, the world's steepest cogwheel railway, the cableway and gondolas down to Kriens and the bus back. Self-guided, May to October.
